Across the Desert Spare

Hello,

I spoke with Tim the parapsychologist again, and again he said that he and the team would return. I don't know anymore if it matters. See, I had gotten the feeling the ghost was mollified for a while after slapping the psychic around, but then something happened...

I spent the day and night at Karen's on Thursday. I had called in sick to work. I almost was. The stress is still massive and the slide continues. In case you were wondering Karen had the day off due to construction at her work place. I brought in lunch from the Chinese restaurant local to her apartment. While we were eating, and yes I used chopsticks, I saw a mug on her counter slide from the back to the front very suddenly and then slowly push its lip off of the edge more and more. I don't know what made me look just before it started moving, but I did.

I faked a bit of a choking fit. I had been sitting on a stool around the corner of the breakfast bar. I stood up and shifted the short distance to the counter and pushed the mug back with my wrist. Karen asked if I was okay and after a couple more coughs that were no longer exactly fake I nodded. I told her the old standby that a bit of noodle went down the wrong pipe.

Looking back I suppose I should have felt a sharp twinge of fear when I saw the mug move like that, but instead I only felt my heart sink. So much for my house being haunted. It must be me. I must be haunted.

A Skeptical Ghost

Hello,

It's been over a week since the parapsychologists from WPIS were at the house. They didn't come back this past week, but Tim said they would be back. I'll be a little surprised if they do after what happened. I'll also admit that I was skeptical of using a psychic medium. If it wasn't for the rational approach the investigators came in with I might have balked at the idea. I must say that Tim lends credence to the idea. He told me that any psychic worth their salt will refuse to become involved in a haunting case until a host of rational explanations have been exhausted, or there is something just so inexplicable that it being faked is unlikely. It sounds a little arrogant of them, but I think it makes sense.

They came on Wednesday night because I knew that I didn't have to do anything other than work at my desk on Thursday. The psychic was a woman named... on second thought I'll withhold her name. She took a tour around the house with Tim and I, none of us speaking. Then she returned to the upstairs hallway. She didn't stop at my room but outside of the other one that I use for an office. She said she sensed the spirit of a child. Tim didn't come up with anything about children, but I held my tongue. The psychic began to talk to this ghost child. She asked if it could give us a sign that it was aware of us. The hall was silent and nothing moved.

The psychic asked in harsher tones for some kind of sign. She got it. There was a loud snapping sound like you'd hear in a wet towel fight. Turns out it was a slap. The psychic had a large almost circular red welt on her face like she'd been hit with a plate. Tim asked her if she was okay, then asked if she was certain they were dealing with a child. He pointed out what he found in his research. She told him it was absolutely a child. The ghost slapped her again, on the other side of her face. She dropped to her knees asking why the little girl was so angry.

This time the psychic was thrown down the hallway past me. Seems she came up just short of the wall and then fell on her backside. We stared in disbelief. She looked terrible, hair down in front of her face, bright red slap marks visible behind the strands. Tim told me, I thought a little loudly, that this was the first they had used this psychic, but her references had been good. She insisted she was accurate and her head snapped back hitting the wall. I don't think Tim was very happy at all. He went and helped her to her feet. He told her to hold her tongue because the ghost was escalating. They had passed me when she made some remark about the ghost. There was another loud slap and she jerked to the right like she'd been hit on the ass.

Now I have to wait for Tim to decide when to come back, and I guess, what to do. I'll keep you informed.

Kitchen Shenanigans

Hi,

The psychic medium came along with the paranormal investigators this week, but I don't think I'm quite ready to talk about it.

I need to find some kind of lighter side to what is going on. There was one kind of funny moment a while ago before I told you about the haunting. It was maybe even before I started this blog. It was one of the rare times I spotted an object hovering in mid-air. It stopped moving a split second after I spotted it, just hanging over the kitchen table. I sidled up to it slowly and it held its position. I almost felt like I was trying to close in on a small wild animal and that it might dart away at any moment. I got right up to it and it didn’t bolt.

I was right next to it and well within arm’s length. I passed my hand over top of it and it didn’t move. There obviously wasn’t a wire or anything like that. I waved my arm slowly to one side of. I switched to the other side. There were no invisible arms or the like. I even circled the table and tried behind it. I was afraid to take my eyes off of it so I didn’t. I must have blinked, but maybe I didn’t. I can’t say how long I took. I wasn’t moving very fast, but I also didn’t want to take too long. There was nothing there either.

I moved back around to the front of the table. I started to pass my hand under it. My hand was directly under it when whatever was holding it aloft let it go. I don’t know which made me jump more, the sudden drop or when I fumbled in catching it and it sent salt flying up through the air in an arc in front of my face. Yes. It was the saltshaker I caught floating about.

Okay, retelling that did make me feel better. I’ll feel even better when I go pick up Karen.

Enter the Parapsychologists

Hi,

I received a very quick turn around from the paranormal investigators that I contacted. FYI, they're called the Wisconsin Paranormal Investigation Service. They found a little bit more about the house than I did. There were at least two deaths in the house. Both of them were of natural causes. There was a man that had a heart attack and was pronounced dead upon the arrival of the paramedics. At least I guess they called them paramedics back in the 40s. The other was actually only a couple owners back from me. An elderly lady passed away in her sleep right in my bedroom. That's more than a little creepy. Any way, neither seems like the right kind of deaths (what a morbid idea that is, right deaths versus wrong deaths) to produce a haunting. Maybe the man had something undone or whatever. I don't know, and I guess the investigators research didn't pull up anything like that. How does something like that end up reported though?

It gave me real pause about the woman who died in my bedroom. I'm sure some people would never set foot in that room again let alone never sleep there. I figures, it's not like I'm sleeping in the same bed. I bought my own. Really though, how many places are there you can sleep where someone hasn't died in there or at least close proximity. Not many old pre-existing homes I'd bet. The lead investigator, Tim, informed me that a lot of people used to die at home, especially back when doctors made house calls and not many people ever saw the inside of a hospital while alive. I'm terrible when it comes to history like that. I don't when hospitals became common or when things were invented like air conditioning.

It was on Thursday that Tim and his team came by to tell me about what they had discovered. They also wanted to take a bunch or readings. They hauled in equipment, apparently just the tip of the iceberg, and looked at temperatures, magnetic fields, and other stuff I won't pretend to understand, yet. They seemed satisfied that that night at least everything was normal and there no red flags thus far to eliminate the possibility of a haunting. Like I needed to know that. They were also not disappointed.

In the dining room one of them noticed a painting hanging askew. She set it straight and carried on whatever she was doing. When she looked at it again it was tilted back the way it had been. She called us all into the room. She set it straight and as we watched it moved crooked in one quick and sharp movement. She straightened it again. This time it spun around 360 degrees then launched off of the wall. I managed to catch it. I rather like that painting. I don't think the ghost liked being tested. Needless to say the investigation will continue on.

Haunting Help Contacted

Hi,

Last Saturday night went fine. Karen let me stay overnight. I don't think she suspected anything, and really how would anyone know that I was avoiding my house because I couldn't handle the haunting there any more and had to get out if only for a night. I don't think Karen is reading my blog, and I hope that remains the case. I've been keeping it on the need to know. Luckily you're on the list for need to know. I haven't even talked about my house at all with her. She probably thinks I have an apartment. She likely expects it’s a bachelor disaster area. I guess sometime sooner than later she'll want to come over.

I returned to the house Sunday and managed a quiet night. There have been the usual times over the week where objects are in different places. I have not seen anything moving, so it's keeping it too itself again. This is going to sound, I don't know, counterintuitive or an about face, but I hope there is some visible activity. I got in touch with a paranormal investigation group. They said it's not like on the TV shows. I don't know what those are like. Maybe I should find out. They are going to look into the history of the house and neighborhood before they get back to me. That seems sensible to me. I guess they probably get a lot of crackpots. Not to mention all of that forewarned is forearmed stuff. Maybe they'll find out something I didn't.

Back to the phenomena, I want these investigators to see and hear something first hand. Except for the torn curtain brackets I suppose there is no physical proof. It's all just my word. Now I wished I'd have kept those brackets. I suppose they still wouldn't be very good proof anyway. I'll keep you all informed of what happens next with the investigation.

Have a great 4th, everybody!
