Proxy Hacker Patsy

Every journey no matter how long begins with a first step. We made one such step this week. Melvin has been working like there is no tomorrow on tracking down the blogosphere and conspiracy-nets people responsible for the murder of Parwin Chaudhry. You might remember that some of them traced back to the name Malcolm Jonovich, who was under the control of a Domine. Melvin was able to trace one of those posters back further to a live human. There was no guarantee that we would find anything other than another man with a block of missing time, but we had to try.

It was Thursday that we made our move. The man lived in a suburban home in a quiet neighborhood, distancing him from any of the other going-ons. There was no ready surveillance in the area so we enlisted the aid of Madam Sarcova. Melvin sent a couple wireless cameras with me and told me where to position them so that he had at least a little coverage of his own to the exterior of the place.

Myron and I went to the house posing as salesmen. When Myron insisted the man let us enter to demonstrate our product the man resisted his command and we knew there was still a Domine in the picture. We immediately barged in. The man made a beeline for his Z-Phone. I held Myron back a moment until he had dialed and then snatched the phone across the room to me. The man came at me and I gently lifted him off of the floor. I sent the number to Melvin and Myron started looking around the house.

Melvin came up with nothing on the phone number. It was the kind of business number that has an answering service attached and anyone with the password can access. It had no messages and none stored in any memory that Melvin could immediately get at. Instead Myron found an interesting clue.

The man had a hacking manual that had been made at a print shop. It included instructions for hiding what you are doing online, how to fake being someone else, and how to get information out of different places using ready-made software available online on the dark web. Also included in the manual were some lose handwritten notes and some other notes in the margins. I left the manual with Jenny to see what she could find off of it. That was after she'd taken a couple hours to check the house for anything else that seemed out of place.

Sarah and Myron found the Domine. There was nothing to do with it, but leave it there. We didn't know how long it would take its maker to discover our intrusion so we left as soon as possible. Hopefully this first step will lead to more in the right direction.

Strained Tea for Three

Early Monday morning there was an assault on a Protectorate safe house used as a training location for individuals still getting a handle on their gift. Two of the house occupants were injured. One of the attackers was burned severely and the other two kidnapped the trainee. That trainee was Susan D'Amico.

Mr. Peterson of the Wisconsin O.S.I.R. arrived in the city that afternoon and invited Sarah and I over to his hotel room. He showed us a video of Susan. She stood in some kind of industrial building's hallway with plain cinderblock walls. Her head was pointed directly at the camera but her gaze was somewhere short of it. She said that Domine wanted me to leave him alone and that she'd burn me slow if I didn't stay away. She would stay with Domine until it was safe. Then she got a far away look and said maybe it would be September.

Mr. Peterson was quiet, but Josh could tell he was restraining himself. Josh had seen that pent-up, focused rage before. He'd been on the receiving end of it. Sarah commented that something was different about Susan. None of the other people affected by a Domine showed any emotion. Sarah said she didn't need her gift to know that Susan had looked wistful at the end. Mr. Peterson suggested that maybe she'd been turned rather than puppeted.

I winced and it rippled through my back, the muscles seizing into a huge wicked cramp. Mr. Peterson looked at me sitting at the little hotel table with my teeth gritted tight. He waited until I relaxed and carefully sat back in the chair. He asked me to call Melvin.

I dialed and put the phone on speaker. I set it down. Somewhere a phone stuck in an air conditioning vent vibrated softly. Another phone taped to it with electrical tape dialed a different number. Melvin had set it up as an easier method to me blind dialing with my gift. Melvin answered immediately. Mr. Peterson gave Melvin an online address in a style I didn't recognize. He also gave Melvin a heads up on where the local O.S.I.R. office's case files on the Domine events would be loaded.

After, Sarah and I explained in detail everything we knew and suspected. Mr. Peterson thanked us and said he'd keep in touch if he got any leads on his niece. We said we'd do the same. Then we left.

I felt very relieved to be out of there. Even I didn't think all of his tension was due to the kidnapping. Sarah said that she had almost reached out to put a hand on his shoulder when he was watching the video, but she'd thought better of it. The last thing she needed to see would be him to flinch from her touch. It struck me suddenly that Mr. Peterson either had a glass eye now or a colour contact on the eye I blinded.

Someone Makes Them

I almost killed Sarah.

It was Tuesday morning. We were eating breakfast and I felt like I had just closed my eyes and then I feel this clawing at my good hand. I open my eyes and I am strangling Sarah. I can't stop. I feel my fingers digging into her throat, my palm jammed into her windpipe. She's clawing and I bet she's trying to force an emotion on me, but I don't feel that. Just my hand.

She jabs a fork into my forearm and I feel the sharp pain, but my hand doesn't stop. She leaves the fork there standing upright, waving back and forth as she tries to pull away from me.

I want to scream, but my mouth doesn't obey me any more than my hand does. I think to move my hand but I have such a grip on her, and I can feel her weakening pulse under my middle finger, that I'm afraid I might tear her throat out if that's even possible.

I split my focus with the salt shaker. I can see the little lines radiating from Sarah's form. She is a warm purple shape with holes where her eyes should be. I have a clear intention for the me that is the salt shaker. I feel rigid like it is. I gather my strength around it's hard but brittle form. I then disregard it, leaving it to the intention I gave it.

I focus myself on Sarah and I can feel her heart slowing. I make my heart feel what hers does. I slow down to her level. I make myself slow down even further. I can hear my blood in my ears thud, and thud, and then pause and thud, then pause longer. I black out.

When I come to, I am pinned to the floor with my back aching, pressed to the linoleum. I don't feel any extra weight, nor should I. I have unsatisfied movement in that direction. My arms are free though and Sarah, eyes bloodshot, a vicious bruise across her throat, comes and handcuffs my good hand to the fridge handle.

I feel like myself, but I did beforehand too, until I proved to have no bodily control. The fork is still in my arm. I try waving my hand and it does as I command. I lie there until the spasming of my back lifts me off of the floor a little and I know that the psychokinesis has lapsed. I reach out my thoughts for the salt shaker, but I'm no longer partially focused there any longer.

That was how it happened. Leery in the extreme, but unwilling to leave us alone, Myron came over and he and Sarah located the Domine in our apartment. Sarah says she can feel it hanging in the corner of the kitchen still. She says it's like when you stand next to the counter and close your eyes, and you feel the counter there even though you don't see it. It has no emotions, and she can't tell if its waiting to activate again, or if it will just fade away without any more trouble.

There is trouble coming though. Trouble coming for whoever makes the Domine. The Protectorate has pledged its full support in catching this monster. We will find him or her and put a stop to this madness and death with one final death. I'm coming for you, and I'm bringing all the help I can muster!

Someone Thinks of the Children

I made a mistake last week. What I said could have been the entire truth, but instead it was not. It wasn't little bits of leaked information from family, friends, and neighbors that was responsible for the death of Parwin Chaudhry. No, instead there was a smoking gun. It surfaced on a forum that two men visited a family with a little girl and a haunted house. The post was sketchy but pretty much on the mark about our visit to the family. Speculation led to people digging into the situation. That speculation was driven by someone who at first seemed to be separate from the original poster, but Melvin was able to discover they were one in the same. They lead back to the real identity of Malcolm Jonovich, the man whose death I'm responsible for over a year ago.

In a twist that I didn't see coming, another voice in the discussion, from a skeptic, also turned out to be the same person as the other two. Between the three identities they provided enough information and clues to not only cause a buzz among the ghost hunting communities but to involve a group called the Reasonable Protectors League. If you are a parent and you make a big deal about living in a haunted house, or you talk about seeing aliens, or hunting bigfoot, or being involved with psychic phenomena then the Reasonable Protectors League will soon be after you, trying to get your children taken away by local law enforcement. They argue that such people are a danger to their own children and other people around them. I don't know how successful they are in the take aways, but they raise enough of a stink of suspicion and distrust about you that it affects your work and relationships. They have even gone so far as to sue some of the people they consider to be the worst offenders.

The Reasonable Protectors League were the final straw that broke the camel's back, and got Parwin killed. The person most responsible though is the thief of Malcolm Jonovich's name. As if I didn't know Domine was responsible this message surfaced up on Socialmabob… "Melvin's always watching. Myron shares some tricks. Josh has the all big plans. I have the best tricks. Should have taken fair Sarah. She's so very keen. Then you'd had a witness. To tag along Domine."
